Re: ATTENTION HP dvX laptop owners with speaker sound issues ...
Interesting. Until a few days ago, sound on my dv5z "just worked". Apparently an update to alsaplayer-alsa 0.99.80-3ubuntu1, alsaplayer-gtk 0.99.80-3ubuntu1, alsaplayer-common 0.99.80-3ubuntu1 borked my sound (i.e., speaker could be made to work by plugging in the headphones).

I'll look into this new alsa-driver.

This team is a group of HP Pavilion dvXz owners and/or developers interested in getting it to work 100% under Linux. This laptop "z" series features a discrete ATI graphics card and comes with different screen size configurations (dv2/dv4/dv5/dv6/dv7/Compaq-CQ4x).

You can check the model and generation of you laptop with this command:
sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name

There are currently around ~90 users that have installed Linux (not only Ubuntu) on this laptop, some of them members of this Launchpad group.

Please subscribe to this team if you are new and own or develop for this HP Pavilion dvXz series laptop with discrete ATI graphics card (not the one with Intel or Nvidia graphics).

Some users of this laptop seem to be having troubles getting all sound features to work. In several cases, these problems seem to have been solved by using Ubuntu 9.04 (sometimes 8.10). Some other reports on ways to solving them here:
